Competitive Strategies of Asian Businesses

Description : Asia is increasingly at the centre of global economic activity, and Asian firms are now poised to turn global. There are many opportunities for Asian business firms within and outside Asia. These firms need to formulate strategies to establish their uniqueness for sustainable competitive advantage. This course will allow students to explore the formulation of competitive strategies for Asian firms within the context of their distinct cultural, geo-political and historical background. Students will acquire the conceptual skills for strategic thought from an Asian perspective.

Corporate Governance

Description : Most contemporary organizations are governed by a board of directors who have to chart and steer the organization’s strategy while adhering to the law and managing an increasingly diverse set of stakeholders. This unit deals with the foundations and conduct of effective corporate governance in contemporary organizations. Students will learn about corporate governance law, stakeholder management, internal controls and monitoring, and the role of the board in strategy formulation and implementation.

Mergers and Acquisitions

Description : Mergers and acquisitions are frequent in the corporate world, and involve the unification of organizations that are related or unrelated in business. Increasingly, many mergers and acquisitions are international in nature. Managers need the tools to evaluate the strategic benefits and pitfalls of undertaking this activity so that the value created is maximized. In this course, Students will acquire the skills to understand and evaluate the strategic, organizational, financial and legal aspects of mergers and acquisitions. Students will also acquire the knowledge necessary for initiating mergers and successfully managing the post-merger period.

Organizational Structure and Strategy

Description : In this course, students will learn concepts and skills required for effective implementation of strategy. Strategy implementation requires organizational structures and controls that are congruent with the organization’s strategy. Successful implementation also requires change management skills. Students of this course will learn about the relationship between organizational strategy, structure and systems, and they will also acquire the necessary skills for putting this knowledge into action.

Description : Strategic Planning is one of the main functions of managers. In this course, students will learn the basic tools of strategic planning and strategy formulation. They will learn the concepts associated with competitive strategy, industry and environmental analysis and various strategic options. Students will also be introduced to planning techniques including scenario planning.

Strategic Game Theory for Managers

Description : Game theory provides an elegant framework to understand explain strategic interaction of players in a field. These players could be competing organizations in an industry, and each organization has to understand the moves and countermoves of its competitors while formulating its own appropriate competitive response. This course will allow students to appreciate the building blocks of game theory and its usefulness for strategic management. Students will also acquire the tools and skills necessary for enhancing their strategic thinking and execution of strategy.

Strategic Marketing

Description : This course is aimed at developing strategic decision making skills with particular reference to marketing. The unit presents the conceptual idea of integration of marketing planning into the strategic planning process. The focus of this unit is on strategic marketing planning. Issues in this area will be explored in depth and at a relatively advanced level. The student is expected to fully understand the conceptual and theoretical basis of strategy and demonstrate competence in utilizing that understanding in the applied context.
