Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Description : This course is designed to provide students with the skills and practice to pursue a career as professional entrepreneurs or as innovative executives in larger organizations and who may later face the task of managing the firm or a sub unit in an entrepreneurial and innovative context. It is highly relevant to students who wish to manage entrepreneurial ventures in established organizations.

Developing a Business Plan

Prerequisite :

Credit : 3

Description : Building on the analyses, theoretical foundations, and skills of New Venture Creation, student teams will develop business plans based upon a previously developed feasibility study. This course is designed to be very hands-on and experientially based. The majority of the course load is geared to the research and development of the many facets of the business plan.

Entrepreneurial Finance

Description : This course focuses on the financing decisions of entrepreneurs. The first part of the course emphasizes identifying and valuing entrepreneurial business opportunities. The second part addresses how and from whom entrepreneurs raise funds and how financial contracts are structured to manage risk and align incentives. The third part addresses ways in which entrepreneurs “harvest” success and value. Teaching notes emphasize principals and tools, and class cases cover firms in many industries and countries.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship

Description : This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the process for identifying and evaluating entrepreneurial opportunities.  Students will also learn how strategy, marketing, financing, legal matters, and cash flow impact opportunities in terms of execution and growth, and how to position a new firm for success.  Even those who do not feel that they are entrepreneurs will benefit by discovering how to function more effectively in entrepreneur-led organizations.  Students responsible for technical innovation and business development within existing organizations should find this course helpful.

New Business Venture Initiation

Description : This course provides an overview of the entrepreneurial process. The focus is on identifying and evaluating ideas and learning the steps and competencies required to launch a successful new venture. Students are challenged to consider the appropriateness of an entrepreneurial career for themselves. Specific topics include characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, techniques for finding and screening ideas, entrepreneurial finance, the politics of new ventures, valuation and deal making, writing a business plan, buying a business, family business dynamics, and managing crisis and failure.

Private Equity and Entrepreneurship in Emerging Markets

Description : This course provides students with an understanding of the venture capital market.  Students will learn how private equity funds are raised and structured, and how the venture capital market compares with other sources of capital.  Students will also learn how investments are selected, negotiated, valued, and structured.

Product Innovation Management

Prerequisite : MKT500

Credit : 3

Description :Students will examine the product development process from idea generation and evaluation; to design, development, and testing; and through market launch.  Additional topics include technology forecasting and assessment, R&D management, technical planning, and organizational models.

Small Business Management

Prerequisite : FIN500, FIN501

Credit : 3

Description : This course is designed to help entrepreneurs who are considering starting a small business. Students explore small business issues such as succession planning, use of computerization and online techniques, the intrusion of family issues in the workplace, and buying an existing business or franchise. The unit is structured around a series of plans or documents that are important to the various facets of a small business venture.

Venture Capital Finance and Investment
