Director Pastreich was the co-founder, with Professor Yoo Sanghyeok of Woosong University, of the Daejeon Green Growth Forum (previously known as the Daejeon Environment Forum), an effort to combine academics, local government, and industry in a discussion on environmental policy for Daejeon, Korea, and East Asia. The Daejeon Green Growth Forum is a group of experts in environmental sciences and policy from the Daejeon research community that meets regularly to discuss the serious environmental issues facing Korea and Asia. The members of the Daejeon Environment Forum represented all of the major research institutes, including KAIST, Korea Electric Power Research Institute, National Fusion Research Institute, Korea Basic Science Research Institute, Chungnam University, Korea Institute of Energy Research, Korea Research Institute of Standards & Science, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, and the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology. Dr. Jiwon Yang, the Vice President of KAIST, served as Chairman of the Daejeon Green Growth Forum. In November 2008, the Daejeon Green Growth Forum was formally recognized by the Korean government as the first local forum on environmental issues working with the central government. The Daejeon Green Growth Forum will work directly with the President of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of the Environment to contribute to Korea's new "Green Growth" economic strategy. The Daejeon Green Growth Forum is broken into three working groups: "Climate Change Technologies," "Green Industries and Energy Industries," and "The Green Society." Director Pastreich heads the education program of the working group "The Green Society," coordinating with the central and local government, research institutes, corporations, and increasingly other institutions in Japan, China, Mongolia, and elsewhere as part of the forum's efforts.
