Non-Proliferation Initiative
The Asia Institute is engaged to address the international challenges posed by the rapid spread of nuclear power and evaluate its merits and drawbacks in an objective manner that takes into concern the climatic and environmental impact of other energy sources.

The Asia Institute works quite closely with the Korea Institute for Nuclear Safety on a careful evaluation of the implications of nuclear power for Asia. We are engaged in a study of nuclear power in Southeast Asia together with the Korea Institute for Nuclear Safety that we expect will lead to a better understanding of the prospects for nuclear power in that region, and throughout the world.

We are also working to promote the elimination of nuclear weapons from the earth through a systematic promotional effort. As a massive expansion in the usage of nuclear power comes into full swing in Asia, nuclear safeguards and safety will be a central issue and the Asia Institute works with the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety to propose solutions.
Under the leadership of Dr. John Endicott, the vice chancellor of the SolBridge International School of Business, the Asia Institute hosted the plenary session of the Limited Nuclear Weapons Free Zone for Northeast Asia in October 2008. This event brought together scholars, ambassadors and generals from around the world for a frank discussion of a concrete and practical proposal to limit nuclear weapons in Northeast Asia. The Asia Institute continues its dialog with former (and current) government officials, policy experts and academics from the Republic of Korea, the United States, China, Japan, DPRK, Russia, Mongolia, France, Argentina, and Finland as part of this project of which the Asia Institute is currently interim secretariat. In light of the upcoming review conference of the Non-proliferation Treaty in 2010, the Asia Institute's efforts to promote a consensus on non-proliferation and nuclear safety is critical.
The Daejeon meeting (12th plenary) of the Limited Nuclear Weapons Free Zone for Northeast Asia (LNWFZ-NEA) was the culmination of a comprehensive effort to create a secure and prosperous East Asia in the 21st century through frank discussions between credentialed specialists and government officials. LNWFZ-NEA has held regular meetings since 1991 in an effort to establish a regional security community involving all the nations of Northeast Asia and reduce the danger of nuclear conflict in Asia.
