Director Pastreich Appointed as Member of Chungnam Province's International Relations Committee

Director Pastreich will serve from 2009 as a member of the International Relations Committee for the province of Chungnam in Korea. Pastreich served previously as advisor to the governor of Chungnam. In this role, Pastreich will help direct Chungnam's international engagement and efforts to draw foreign investment and establish international alliances throughout the world for further economic development. Chungnam is one of Korea's most advanced industrial cluster and the home to the Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone.

 

Pastreich visits Chengdu to Discuss Environmental Policy in China

Director Pastreich visited Chengdu China to give a talk on China's role in the emerging environmental economy and meet with professors from the department of economics and the Environmental Studies School. Pastreich spoke concerning the proposal he wrote with John Feffer to rebuild Sichuan's Wenchuan as an ecocity after the earthquake. Professor Liu Ming of the department of economics arranged Pastreich's visit to the resort Dujiangyan, a city hard hit by the May earthquake, to observe reconstruction efforts.

 

Dr. John Endicott to assume position of President, Woosong University.

Dr. Endicott, senior associate of the Asia Institute and vice chancellor of the SolBridge International School of Business, assumed the position of president of Woosong University. He serves as the first non-Korean president of a private university in Korea and will continue his efforts on behalf of the SolBridge International School of Business and the Asia Institute.

Director Pastreich visited the Sejong Institute in Seoul to discuss with Dr. Sun-Hak Baik the Asia Institute's Post-2008 Asian Finance Project.

He also visited the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) with Dr. Ian Simon of the Science and Technology Policy Institute to meet with KIST's President Dr. Dong-Hwa Kum and discuss recent developments in biotechnology. Pastreich and Simon toured KIST laboratories and met with Dr. Chang-Won Kim of the Institute of Pasteur Korea.

 

New Efforts to Establish Korea-India Exchanges in Business and Technology

Director Pastreich and Project Director Neeru Biswas visited the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the Federation of Korean Industries to discuss the role of the Asia Institute's Korea-India Business and Technology Initiative and exchange opinions on the proposed Korea-India Chamber of Commerce and the implications of the India-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) which is set for ratification next year. Neil Routman (speechwriter for the minister) and Jin-Suk Kim of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy pledged to include the Asia Institute in their upcoming efforts to promote Korea-India ties.

Pastreich and Biswas met with Chul-Han Park, head of the America and Europe Department at the Federation of Korean Industries, to discuss a possible seminar on Korea-India relations.

Pastreich and Biswas met the same day with Vice President Peter Lymm of Samsung SDS and Dr. Lakhvinder Singh, president of the Indo-Korea Policy Forum.

The Daejeon Environmental Forum was officially recognized by the Metropolitan City of Daejeon and the Ministry of the Environment as the "Daejeon Green Growth Forum." The forum is the first of its kind to take on an official role as a bridge between central and local government, research institutes and industry on environmental policy. Director Pastreich delivered a paper on the political aspects of scientific policy at the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) 과학기술한림원on November 30, 2008 in Bundang, Kyonggi Province. With its membership limited to the most distinguished Korean scholars, KAST is the highest forum for discussions on science policy in the nation. In his paper, Pastreich drew attention to the decline in the stature of science within Korean society and make suggestions as to how the close relationship of basic scientific research to daily life could be made more visible.

Professor K.K. Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor, and Professor Saroj Aggarwal, Director, Academic Affairs, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, India, and Professor H.G.A. Siddiqi, Vice Chancellor, North South University, Dhaka, Bangladesh were guests of SolBridge.

   As part of Asia Institute initiatives, both professors from India met with senior professors, researchers and students at KAIST and NNFC (National Nanofab Center). An informal discussion with research students of Professor Doo-Hwan Bae, Director, Software Process Improvement Center and Professor Moon-Zoo Kim of the Computer Science Department was held at the Computer Science Department of KAIST. Professor Saroj Aggarwal gave a talk titled, "Nano Crystalline Calcium Phosphate and AM co-AMPSA Nanogels" at the National Nano Fab Center.

   Professor Siddiqi addressed SolBridge students and invited business students from Korea to consider internships in the NGO sector of Bangladesh. He said that Grameen, the organization started by Nobel laureate Mr. M. Yunus and BRAC (Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee) are well known in the developing world for their work with the poor.

The Daejeon meeting (12th plenary) of the LIMITED NUCLEAR WEAPONS FREE ZONE FOR NORTHEAST ASIA (LNWFZ-NEA) hosted by the Asia Institute of the SolBridge International School of Business was the culmination of a comprehensive effort to create a secure and prosperous East Asia in the 21st Century through frank discussions between credentialed specialists and government officials. LNWFZ-NEA has held regular meetings since 1991 in an effort to establish a regional security community involving all the nations of Northeast Asia and reduce the danger of nuclear conflict in Asia.

This session included representatives from the Republic of Korea, the United States, China, Japan, Russia, Mongolia and North Korea. Observers from Argentina, Finland, France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Pakistan, India, the Central Asian Nuclear Free Zone and the Southeast Asia Nuclear Free Zone will also attend. The Dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Dr. Robert Gallucci served as keynote speaker.

Representatives and observers engaged in a serious debate on systems to reduce the threat of nuclear conflict, regional confidence building measures, and economic incentives for bringing the DPRK (North Korea) into the international community.

Under the leadership of Dr. John Endicott, the Vice Chancellor of the SolBridge International School of Business, the Asia Institute committed itself to organizing the plenary session of the Limited Nuclear Weapons Free Zone for Northeast Asia. .

Visit to Oil Spill Site on Taean Peninsula
January 5, 2008

Director Pastreich visited the Taean Peninsula in his capacity as adviser to the governor, meeting with citizens and inspecting the cleanup efforts following the December oil spill. Director Pastreich also spoke at length with government officials at the command center and volunteers about his plans to establish a park for children as a memorial to the spill. He also visited a local elementary school in Taean to speak with the children about their experiences.

Pastreich talks about Free Economic Zone on KBS

On November 29th, Associate Professor at SolBridge Emanuel Pastreich appeared on the policy discussion program of KBS (Korean Broadcasting Service) "The Issues and the Situation on the Ground " to discuss the proposed "West Sea Free Economic Zone" for Chungnam and Gyeonggi Provinces.

Pastreich has worked closely on this project and others concerning the economic and technological growth of Chungnam province in his position as special advisor for international relations to Chungnam Governor Wan-Goo Lee.

Pastreich stressed the importance of establishing a livable environment for foreigners in the West Sea area so that the full economic and technological potential of this region can be realized. In particular, he spoke of the need for English language schools, signage and printed materials in English and other languages, and greater accessibility to foreign investors. He described the possible economic benefits for Korea and for East Asia as a whole, of making this unique cluster into a culturally sophisticated center for the region. The "West Sea Free Economic Zone " was approved by the central government in December of 2007 and efforts are underway to undertake major construction efforts from this year.

SolBridge Distinguished Speakers Series


John Feffer, one of the most respected writers on international relations and current editor of Foreign Policy in Focus, visited

SolBridge International School of Business to deliver a lecture on the "The New Geopolitics of Engaging North Korea." Mr. Feffer outlined the political paradoxes confronting each of the major countries engaged in the Six Party Talks and offered his insights as to possible future outcomes in Northeast Asia. Mr. Feffer also met with faculty and students to discuss his work and toured the SolBridge campus.

Foreign Policy in Focus is administered by the the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC. Among Mr. Feffers numerous books are North Korea/South Korea: U.S. Policy and the Korean Peninsula and The Future of Korea-US Relations

Mr. Feffer was a writing fellow at Provisions Library in Washington, DC and a PanTech fellow in Korean Studies at Stanford University. He is a former associate editor of World Policy Journal and has worked as an international affairs representative in Eastern Europe and East Asia for the American Friends Service Committee. He has studied in England and Russia, lived in Poland and Japan, and traveled widely throughout Europe and Asia.

 "Whose Afraid of Globalization"

Nayan Chanda, distinguished journalist, author and scholar, winner of the 2005 Shorenstein Award for Journalism, will deliver the inaugural lecture of the SolBridge Distinguished Speaker Series. The topic of the lecture is “Who is Afraid of Globalization?”

Nayan Chanda is the Director of Publications and the Editor of YaleGlobal Online Magazine at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. For nearly thirty years before he joined Yale University Chanda was with the Hong Kong-based magazine the Far Eastern Economic Review as its editor, editor-at-large and correspondent. In 1989-90, Chanda was a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. From 1990-1992 Chanda was editor of the Asian Wall Street Journal Weekly, published from New York.

Mr. Cardullo delivered lectures for students and faculty at SolBridge International School of Business and hosted several round-table discussions with members of the Daejeon business and research communities. He met with the governor of Chungnam Province, Wan-Ku Lee, and delivered a talk at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) on the commercialization of satellite technology. Although Mr. Cardullo serves today as the managing director for the Belfield Group in Washington, D.C., a consulting firm for technology transfer, corporate strategy and private equity concerns.

Ms. Johnson visited SolBridge International School of Business to discuss her legal work with faculty as part of our school’s efforts to widen its perspective and reach out to experts in a variety of fields.

Shirley Johnson is the National Chair of Greenberg Traurig's Antitrust & Trade Regulation Practice. She is a seasoned legal professional with more than 30 years of antitrust experience. Ms. Johnson counsels clients on all antitrust issues and defends them before the Federal Trade Commission, the Antitrust Division, United States Department of Justice, and State Attorneys general.

David Straub, Visiting Scholar Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center Stanford University

One of the earliest visitors to SolBridge International School of Business before our official opening, was Mr. David Straub, visiting scholar at Stanford University, author of numerous papers and articles, and former US diplomat. Mr. Straub consulted with the SolBridge team concerning our plans for an international program and was the guest of honor at a dinner for leading figures in Daejeon held at the Asia Museum.

David Straub retired from the U.S. Department of State in 2006 as a Senior Foreign Service Officer after a 30-year career focused on Northeast Asian affairs. He worked over 12 years on Korean affairs, first arriving in Seoul in 1979, just months before the assassination of President Park Chung Hee. He served as head of the political section at the U.S. embassy in Seoul from 1999 to 2002 during popular protests against the U.S., and played a key working-level role in the SixParty Talks on North Korea's nuclear program as the State Department's Korea country desk director from 2002 to 2004.

Straub's final assignment was as the State Department's Japan country desk director in 2004, when he was co-leader of the US delegation to talks with Japan on the realignment of the U.S.-Japan alliance and of U.S. military bases in Japan. He currently works as a consultant with Northeast Asia Associates, and lectures on U.S.-Korean relations at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. He is fluent in Korean, Japanese, and German.

Emanuel Pastreich delivers talk at Stanford University Stanford, California

Emanuel Pastreich, associate professor at SolBridge International School of Business, delivered a paper entitled “Korea’s Public Diplomacy: From Hermit Kingdom to Global Hub” at the international conference “Counterpublics and the Asia Pacific” held at Stanford University.

Pastreich drew attention to the new role Korea is playing in East Asia and throughout the world and noted the remarkable innovations that Korea’s diplomacy has undertaken in the period culminating in the election of Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as Secretary General of the United Nations.
